Difference between GSM AND CDMA
1.In GSM the total number of user is not infinite , their is a max limit on number .GSM is less secure mode of transmission as compared with CDMA.As you said EDGE is the next level of GSM , It distribute different location in cell site and each cell site contain one transmission tower.
2.In CDMA ,it is more secure as for each user it user a encrypted key transmission with can be decoded by only a particular user who has the remaining key. But CDMA lose lot of battery power in searching or in switching from one network to other. You must have seen that normally CDMA handset require very frequent charging. The voice quality is the best in CDMA as it use dedicated bandwidth for each user.
Also in GSM the handshaking signal is easier to implement than CDMA.

One of the best characteristics that GSM has over CDMA cellular phone is the use of SIM card. These cards are utilized to hold critical info and to activate the usage of the cellular phone.
CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) is a digital cellular technology that uses spread-spectrum techniques.CDMA consistently provides better capacity for voice and data communications than other commercial mobile technologies, allowing more subscribers to connect at any given time, and it is the common platform on which 3G technologies are built. It doesn't have sim card.
The reason for more GSM usage is that the international Roaming of GSM is Very good and it has sim card,So you can easily swap your sim card when you need.If we got a locked phone means we can unlock it by getting the unlocking service from any one of the online service provider like Unlock-Free.com
